Domaine Mongeard-Mugneret Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru 2015 750ml
Cote de Nuits, Burgundy, France
Stephen Tanzer 95-98
Bright, dark ruby-red. Knockout floral perfume of black cherry, crushed rock, violet, black tea, spices and licorice. Very ripe but vibrant too, conveying a captivating silkiness to the hugely dense, fine-grained flavors of dark fruits and exotic spices. Really floods the mouth and vibrates on the tactile, rising finish, with the noble tannins extending to the far corners of the palate. A grand cru of great concentration and class.
The wood treatment isn't shy though neither is it dominant on the very ripe yet fresh nose that exhibits notes of dark raspberry, pomegranate, warm earth and the sauvage. However it is noticeable on the dense, rich and velvet-textured broad-shouldered flavors that deliver fine length on the powerful if slightly less complex finale. This is a bit woody though the underlying material appears to be present to absorb it in time.
Character of the wine
The wine is harmonious, round, generous, fleshy, ample, mellow, racy and elegant, in colour a deep rich ruby red.
The bouquet is of quite exceptional aromatic intensity in which the concentrated perfumes of rich red and black fruits (cherries, mulberries, blackcurrants), vanilla and spices, woodland undergrowth, violets and, with age, animal pelts, all mingle and combine. In the mouth this ample, meaty, muscular wine achieves perfect balance between fine tannins, mellowness, and a discreet acidity; the complex aromas linger very long in the mouth.
