Brought up all in new oak, the 2013 St Joseph Vignes des Hospices is a huge success in the vintage and needs to be snatched up by savvy readers. Possessing massive granite character, with notes of charcoal, crushed violets, wet rock and cassis and blackcurrant fruit, this beauty is full-bodied, concentrated, chiseled and beautifully pure. Drink this total rock star St Joseph anytime over the coming 15-20 years.

This is from vines planted to a more easterly aspect, and there's a wealth of fine fragrances and detailed aromas such as dark cherries, plums, dark stones and pepper. The palate has plenty of dark Belgian chocolate, black fruits, dark spices and smooth, supple yet muscular tannins. A wonderfully balanced, soft, super-long and great 2013. Bottled February 2016 after 30 months in 100% new oak. Fabulous wine that's best from 2018 and for a decade thereafter at least. From a special plot up above the township — from the same granite as Hermitage.

This has a generous feel, with a velvety edge and a core of warm plum and blackberry confiture notes. Cocoa powder and anise accents shade the finish, which stretches out nicely with air. Lots of depth here. Drink now through 2028.
