With a hard act to follow, the 1999 Chateauneuf du Pape Reserve Le Clos du Caillou showed beautifully and gave up complex spice-box, peppery herbs, game and tobacco-leaf-like aromas and flavors. A full-bodied, rich and layered Chateauneuf, it’s drinking at point, yet will continue to evolve gracefully for upward of another decade.

From a site not far from Chateau Rayas, with a blend of reddish sand, chalk and galets roules; aged in a single new foudre Full medium ruby. Strongly mineral aromas of cassis, black cherry, plum, tobacco and smoky oak. Sweet, rich and layered; more harmonious today than the Quartz bottling. Lovely minerality gives vibrancy to the flavors. Finishes with substantial ripe tannins that really spread out to coat the palate. Shows exotic wood notes, as well as a strong chocolatey character, on the finish.
